How Hard Is the Na Pali Kayak Trip? (And How to Train)

Hard. Seventeen miles and roughly six to seven hours of paddling on open ocean, with no road out once you have started. You do not need kayaking experience and you do not need to be an athlete — but you do need to be genuinely fit, and you need to take the seasickness medication.

What actually makes it hard

It is not one thing. It is six or seven hours of the same thing.

  • Duration, not intensity. No single stroke is difficult. The four-and-a-half-hour block before lunch is what people underestimate.

  • Your hands. Blisters are the most common injury on this trip by a distance, and they arrive around hour three.

  • The sun. Six hours of tropical sun reflecting off water. This is why we tell you to wear a long-sleeved shirt rather than trust sunscreen.

  • The swell. Open ocean, not a bay. It moves the whole time, and it is the reason for the seasickness medication.

  • No exit. Once you are on the water there is no road, no cell service and no bail-out point. Whatever the day is, you finish it.

Who does it, honestly

Ordinary people finish this trip every day we run it, and most of them have never sat in a sea kayak before. Guests in their sixties finish it. Guests who train for a month finish it comfortably; guests who do not, finish it sore.

The pattern we see is simple: the people who struggle are almost never the ones who lacked technique. They are the ones who did not take the seasickness medication, or who arrived without having done anything aerobic in a year.

A four-week plan to arrive ready

You do not need a gym or a kayak. You need aerobic base, some pulling strength, and hands that have held something for a few hours. Four weeks is enough for most reasonably active people. Check with your doctor first if you have any reason to.

WeekAerobicStrengthThe specific bit

1

3 sessions, 30–40 min continuous — brisk walk, swim, bike, row

2 sessions: rows, lat pulldowns or pull-ups, planks

Start wearing your trip hat and sunglasses outdoors so you know they stay on

2

3–4 sessions, 45 min. Add one longer session at the weekend

2 sessions, same movements, more volume

Add grip work — farmer's carries, dead hangs. Your hands are the weak link

3

4 sessions, one of them 90 min continuous

2 sessions, add rotational core work

If you can get on any water at all — a lake, a bay, a gym erg — do 60–90 minutes of it

4

Taper. 2–3 easy sessions, nothing hard after midweek

One light session early in the week, then stop

Test your full kit: shirt, hat, sunscreen, water bottles. Change nothing on trip day

Four weeks is a floor, not a ceiling. Eight is better. If you are already active, week 3 is roughly where you want to be sitting on trip day.

  • Take the seasickness medication. Dramamine or Bonine, the night before and again the morning of, whether or not you get seasick. This is the highest-return thing on this entire page.

  • Tape your hands or bring paddling gloves if you blister easily. Ask your guide on the beach — they will help.

  • Hydrate the day before, not just on the water.

  • Long sleeves. Every single time.

The part nobody tells you

Around hour five, somewhere past Kalalau, most people stop talking. The cliffs are two thousand feet of green going straight up out of the water, there is no boat and no building and no sound except your own paddle, and it is completely obvious why this coast has no road.

That is what you are training for. Not the distance — the twenty minutes in the middle of it where you understand exactly where you are.

5 out of 5 stars
I was honestly prepared to suffer physically from this 17 mile kayak trip, but we had perfect conditions and riding with a guide probably prevented a lot of of it. Honestly, I was barely sore the next day.
